Girls do as well as boys in science and maths at school, yet far fewer young women choose to study or work in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Gender gaps persist because of social expectations, unconscious biases and barriers that often start very early in school. This course gives you practical strategies to recognise and challenge gender stereotypes, create inclusive learning environments and open STEM opportunities to every student. It is designed for teachers and school leaders.
Over five days, you will explore why gender gaps in STEM still exist and how stereotypes, language, teaching materials and expectations can influence students' confidence and choices. Through interactive workshops, case studies and group discussions, you will learn how to design inclusive STEM lessons, use female role models, encourage girls' participation and confidence, and guide all students in their study and career choices. You will also look at how mentoring programmes, partnerships with women working in STEM and school-wide policies can create lasting change in your school or institution.
By the end of the course, you will have designed a gender-equality initiative for STEM in your school and created a plan to put it into practice.
