Nature, school grounds and the local environment can become powerful learning spaces for any subject, from maths and science to language, history and art. Learning outside helps students understand concepts through real experiences, improves motivation and wellbeing, and builds a stronger connection with the natural world. This course gives you the knowledge, skills and practical tools to integrate outdoor learning into your teaching, whatever subject you teach.
Over five days, you will start with the key principles of outdoor education and how it supports learning, and then focus on practical ways to link outdoor activities with the content of different subjects. You will explore environmental literacy, helping students understand ecosystems, natural cycles and their impact on the environment. You will also discover adventure education activities that develop teamwork, confidence and problem-solving, and learn how to involve students in conservation projects that protect local nature. Throughout the course, you will learn how to plan outdoor lessons safely and manage groups outside the classroom, and many sessions will take place outdoors so you can experience each activity yourself.
By the end of the course, you will have designed your own outdoor lessons for your subject and created a plan to make outdoor learning a regular part of your teaching.
