Description
Learning a language is not about memorising grammar rules and word lists: students learn best when they use the language to communicate, solve tasks and talk about things that matter to them. This language teaching methodology course gives you a practical toolkit of modern, active approaches to make your language lessons more communicative, motivating and effective, including how CLIL can connect language learning with other subjects. It is designed for those who teach any foreign or second language, at any stage.
Over five days, you will explore the key principles of modern language teaching, from the communicative approach and meaningful input to student motivation and the right balance between accuracy and fluency. You will try practical activities to develop the four skills and pronunciation, and discover task-based learning, games, drama and project work in the language classroom. You will also learn how CLIL works from the language teacher's point of view: how to support students who learn other subjects through a foreign language, how to collaborate with subject teachers and how to assess language in a fair and motivating way. Every session is practical, so you will experience each activity as a student before adapting it to your own classes.
By the end of the course, you will have designed your own communicative or CLIL-based unit and created a plan to bring active methods into your language teaching.
