Innovative Methods for Adult Education and Lifelong Learning

About this course

Adults come to learning with their own experience, their own expectations and often very little time, so traditional lecture-style teaching rarely works for them. This Erasmus+ KA1 staff training course introduces innovative methods for adult education that you can use straight away with your groups. It is for adult educators, trainers, facilitators and staff in adult education centres, community organisations, NGOs and lifelong learning programmes.

Over five days, you will explore the principles of adult learning (andragogy) and what motivates adults to learn. You will then try out practical, active learning methods for non-formal and adult education:

  • Flipped learning: make the most of limited contact time
  • Peer learning: use the experience already in the room
  • Storytelling: make content memorable and personal
  • Project work: connect learning to real-life goals
  • Simple digital tools: support learning in person and online

You test each method in the group, so you experience it as a learner before using it as a trainer. You will also reflect on how to adapt activities to different backgrounds, levels and schedules, and how to keep adult learners motivated from the first session to the last.

By the end of this professional development course, you will have a set of ready-to-use activities, a session plan for your own learners and practical ideas to make your courses more engaging. The course fits Erasmus+ KA1 adult education projects (KA121-ADU and KA122-ADU) and supports organisations that want to update their teaching and reach new groups of adult learners.
