Children and young people learn best when they can see, touch, explore and experience things for themselves. This outdoor learning course shows you how to take learning beyond the classroom walls and use nature, the school grounds and the local environment as powerful spaces for teaching any subject. From pre-primary to secondary, you will discover how learning by doing can boost motivation, curiosity, cooperation and wellbeing, while still meeting curriculum goals.
Over five days, you will explore the principles of experiential education and the learning cycle of doing, reflecting and applying. Many sessions take place outdoors, so you will experience the activities yourself before adapting them to your students. You will try nature-based games, hands-on challenges, team-building activities and outdoor projects linked to subjects such as science, maths, language and art. You will also learn how to plan outdoor sessions safely, manage groups outside the classroom, adapt activities to different ages and weather conditions, and guide meaningful reflection so that experiences turn into real learning.
By the end of the week, you will have designed and tried out your own outdoor lesson for your subject and age group, and created a plan to make outdoor and experiential learning a regular part of your teaching.
