Student Motivation and Engagement: Practical Strategies for Teachers
About this course
Few things are more challenging in a classroom than students who seem bored, distracted or simply switched off. Motivation cannot be forced, but it can be nurtured with the right strategies. This Erasmus+ KA1 teacher training course gives you practical tools to motivate students, increase participation, give students more ownership of their learning and use feedback that helps them grow. It is designed for primary, secondary and vocational (VET) classrooms and works in any subject.
Over five days, you will explore why students lose interest and what research says about intrinsic motivation: the need to feel capable and connected, and the importance of having choices. You will then try out classroom engagement strategies such as:
- Active participation: better questioning, cooperative activities and lessons connected to students’ lives and interests
- Student autonomy: choice, goal setting and self-assessment
- Growth mindset: helping students believe they can improve
- Motivating feedback: comments that encourage rather than discourage
- Gamification: game elements and challenges that boost engagement without relying only on rewards
By the end of this professional development course, you will have redesigned one of your own lessons or units to make it more motivating and engaging, and created a plan to apply these strategies in your classroom.
COURSE OVERVIEW

- Apply strategies that give students choice and responsibility in their learning.
- Help students set realistic goals and monitor their own progress.
- Give clear, timely and encouraging feedback that helps students improve.
- Design lessons that connect content with students' interests and real life, including game-based challenges.
- Understand why students lose motivation and the difference between motivation that comes from inside and motivation based on rewards.
- Identify the three basic needs that drive motivation: feeling capable, feeling connected and having choices.
- Recognise the classroom factors that increase or reduce participation and engagement.
- Explain how feedback, goals and a growth mindset influence students' effort and confidence.
