Schools and other learning settings bring together people from many cultures, languages and backgrounds. This diversity is a great opportunity for learning, but it can also lead to misunderstandings, stereotypes and tensions when people interpret words, gestures and behaviour in different ways. This intercultural communication course helps you understand how culture shapes communication, recognise and challenge prejudice, and build positive coexistence in diverse groups. It is open to anyone working in education, whatever their role or the age of their learners.
Over five days, you will explore what culture is, how it influences identity, values and everyday behaviour, and how to look at your own culture with fresh eyes. You will discover the main differences in how cultures communicate, from directness and personal space to body language, time and hierarchy, and practise strategies to avoid and repair misunderstandings. You will also reflect on stereotypes, prejudice and unconscious bias, and learn how to address them with learners and colleagues in a constructive way. Finally, you will look at practical ways to create welcoming, inclusive groups, support newcomers and their families, and manage intercultural conflicts with respect and empathy. The course is highly interactive, with simulations, case studies and group discussions.
By the end of the week, you will have designed an intercultural activity or initiative for your learners or institution and created a plan to promote intercultural understanding in your daily work.
