Creative Teaching Methods

About this course

Art, music, drama and visual thinking are not just extras in the timetable: they are powerful ways to help students understand, remember and think more deeply about what they learn in any subject. This creative teaching methods course shows you how to use the arts and creativity as everyday learning tools, and how they can strengthen students' critical thinking, curiosity and confidence. It is designed for pre-primary, primary and secondary classrooms, and no artistic background is needed.

Over five days, you will explore practical, arts-based approaches that you can bring into maths, science, language, history and every other subject. You will learn how to use images and artworks to spark observation, questions and discussion, how to help students show their thinking through drawings, sketchnotes and visual maps, and how drama, music and movement can make abstract ideas easier to understand. You will also discover thinking routines that develop critical thinking, ways to adapt creative activities to different ages, and how to assess creativity and thinking in a fair and simple way. Every session is hands-on, so you will experience each method yourself before adapting it to your students.

By the end of the week, you will have designed your own creative lesson for your subject and age group and created a plan to make creativity a regular part of your teaching.
