Adult learning groups are among the most diverse in education. In the same room you may find people of different ages, cultures and languages, learners with disabilities or learning difficulties, people who left school early, migrants and refugees building a new life, and adults who have never felt comfortable in a classroom. This inclusive adult education course gives you practical strategies to welcome every learner, remove the barriers that keep adults away from learning and help everyone participate and progress. It is designed for those who teach or train adults in adult schools, vocational and professional training, community education, NGOs and other lifelong learning settings.
Over five days, you will explore the barriers that adult learners face, from time, money and family responsibilities to low confidence and negative past experiences of school. You will learn how to support learners with different needs, adapt materials and tasks, and use plain, accessible language. You will discover strategies to manage mixed-level groups, including learners with low literacy, numeracy or digital skills. You will also learn how to work with learners from different cultural and language backgrounds, including migrants, refugees and older adults, and how to create a learning environment where everyone feels respected and safe. Throughout the week, case studies, practical workshops and group work will help you apply each strategy to your own context.
By the end of the week, you will have designed an inclusive session or support plan for your adult learners and created a plan to make your teaching or organisation more inclusive.
