Portuguese for International Teachers and Staff: Language and Culture
About this course
Learning a language is also a way to understand people, traditions and ways of life. This Erasmus+ KA1 course is for teachers, trainers and school staff from any country who want to learn beginner European Portuguese and discover Portuguese culture, so they can connect with Portuguese colleagues and share what they learn with their students. No previous Portuguese is needed.
Over five days, you will learn essential vocabulary, pronunciation and key sentence structures through role-plays, real-life simulations and communicative games. Each session connects language with culture: greetings and social customs, café life, food, music and local festivals. You will learn how to introduce yourself and talk about your life and work, order, shop and pay, and ask for directions and information. Intercultural communication runs through the whole week, helping you understand Portuguese social norms and reflect on your own culture. You will also discover ideas for bringing Portuguese language and culture into your classroom and your school’s international activities.
By the end of this professional development course, you will have a personal phrasebook, an intercultural action to try in your school and a realistic plan to keep learning Portuguese.

- Identify key phrases for greetings, introductions, ordering, shopping and asking for directions.
- Recognise the main sounds of European Portuguese and how they differ from written Portuguese.
- Explain basic Portuguese social customs, such as greetings, politeness and daily routines.
