Instead of designing one lesson for an imaginary "average" student and then adapting it for those who do not fit, what if we planned for everyone from the very beginning? That is the idea behind Universal Design for Learning. This Universal Design for Learning course shows you how to plan lessons, materials and assessment that are flexible and accessible from the start, so that every learner has the chance to take part and succeed. It is designed for anyone involved in teaching and learning, from primary and secondary to vocational and higher education.
Over five days, you will explore the three core principles of UDL and turn them into practical classroom decisions. With engagement, you will learn how to spark interest, offer meaningful choices and help learners stay motivated and persistent. With representation, you will discover how to present information in different ways, through text, images, audio, video and hands-on experiences, so that everyone can understand it. With action and expression, you will see how to give learners different ways to show what they know, and how to design assessment that is fair and flexible. Through practical workshops, real examples and redesign activities, you will learn how to apply UDL without adding extra workload, starting with small changes that make a big difference.
By the end of the week, you will have redesigned one of your own lessons or units using UDL and created a plan to apply these principles in your daily teaching.
