Nature, school grounds and the local environment can become powerful learning spaces for any subject, from maths and science to language, history and art. Learning outside helps students understand concepts through real experiences, improves motivation and wellbeing, and builds a stronger connection with the natural world. This course gives you the knowledge, skills and practical tools to integrate outdoor learning into your teaching, whatever subject you teach.
Over ten days, you will start with the key principles of outdoor education and how to plan safe outdoor lessons, and then focus in depth on practical ways to link outdoor activities with the content of different subjects. You will explore environmental literacy, helping students understand ecosystems, natural cycles and their impact on the environment. You will also discover adventure education activities that develop teamwork, confidence and problem-solving, and learn how to involve students in conservation projects that protect local nature. The longer format gives you time to try a wide range of activities, adapt them to different ages and needs, and design complete outdoor lessons for your subject. Many sessions take place outdoors, so you will experience each activity yourself.
By the end of the course, you will have designed your own outdoor lessons for your subject and created a plan to make outdoor learning a regular part of your teaching.
