Ceramics and pottery for teachers: heritage and innovation

About this course

Clay is one of the oldest materials in human history, and in Spain ceramics are part of everyday life, from colourful painted tiles on façades and courtyards to traditional pottery still made by hand in local workshops. This ceramics course invites you to discover that rich heritage with your own hands and to turn it into creative, hands-on learning for your students. No previous experience with clay is needed.

Over five days, you will learn the main hand-building techniques, such as pinching, coiling, slab building and modelling, and explore traditional Spanish decoration styles, patterns and tile design. You will see how tradition meets innovation through sustainable ceramics, recycled clay and natural materials, as well as new approaches to design. You will also discover how to bring ceramics into any classroom: linking clay work with history, art, maths, science and wellbeing, adapting activities to different ages and organising simple, safe and low-cost clay workshops at school, even without a kiln. Every session is practical, and your pieces will be fired during the week.

By the end of the course, you will take home your own ceramic pieces and a complete clay project ready to use with your students.
