Ceramics and Tile Painting for Educators: Heritage and Innovation

About this course

This Erasmus+ course is for teachers and school staff who want to bring creativity, cultural heritage and hands-on learning into their schools through clay, Spanish ceramics and azulejos, the hand-painted tiles that decorate façades, patios and public spaces all over Spain. You will start by working with clay and learning the main hand-building techniques, such as pinching, coiling, slab building and modelling. From there you will learn the full process of making azulejos, from preparing and cutting the clay tiles to decorating them with traditional techniques such as cuerda seca, cuenca and glaze painting. You will explore Spanish geometric, Mudéjar and floral patterns, as well as azulejo panels and trencadís mosaics. The innovation side of the course covers sustainable ceramics, recycled clay, eco-friendly glazes, contemporary tile design and no-kiln alternatives. The course is fully practical and gives you the chance to share experiences and good practice with colleagues from across Europe. No previous experience with clay is needed. You will take home your own clay pieces and hand-painted azulejos, together with a complete project ready to use with your students and your school community.
