Student Motivation and Engagement: Practical Strategies for Teachers

About this course

Few things are more challenging in a classroom than students who seem bored, distracted or simply switched off. Motivation cannot be forced, but it can be nurtured with the right strategies. This student motivation course gives you a practical set of tools to increase participation, give students more ownership of their learning and use feedback that helps them grow. It is designed for primary, secondary and vocational classrooms and can be applied in any subject.

Over five days, you will explore why students lose interest and what research tells us about what really motivates them, from the need to feel capable and connected to the importance of having choices. You will try out strategies that get every student participating, such as better questioning, cooperative activities and lessons connected to students' lives and interests. You will learn how to give students more autonomy through choice, goal setting and self-assessment, and how to build a growth mindset in the classroom. You will also practise giving feedback that motivates rather than discourages, and discover how game elements and challenges can boost engagement without relying only on rewards.

By the end of the week, you will have redesigned one of your own lessons or units to make it more motivating and engaging, and created a plan to apply these strategies in your classroom.
