Every classroom brings together students who learn in different ways, at different speeds and with different needs. For students with special educational needs (SEN), small changes in how tasks are presented, how the classroom is organised or how learning is assessed can make the difference between feeling excluded and being an active part of the group. This SEN course gives you practical, realistic strategies to include all students in the mainstream classroom without having to prepare a completely different lesson for each one. It is designed for primary, secondary and vocational classrooms.
Over five days, you will gain a clear overview of the most common special educational needs, such as learning difficulties, ADHD, autism, communication difficulties and sensory or physical needs, and learn how to identify the barriers that stop students from learning. You will practise adapting tasks and materials, using visual supports, scaffolding and differentiation, and organising the classroom space, routines and group work so that every student can participate. You will also learn how to adapt assessment fairly, work effectively with support staff and specialists, and build a positive partnership with families. Every strategy is practical and adaptable to your own subject and students.
By the end of the week, you will have designed an inclusive lesson or support plan for your own classroom and created a plan to make your teaching more inclusive.
