Classrooms today bring together students from many countries, cultures and languages, and many schools regularly welcome newcomers who arrive in the middle of the year, sometimes without speaking the school language. This diversity is a huge resource for learning, but it also brings real challenges: helping new students settle in, teaching content to learners who are still developing the language, and making sure no student feels excluded because of their origin, culture or language. This intercultural education course gives you practical strategies to turn your classroom into a welcoming, inclusive and enriching space for everyone. It is designed for primary and secondary classrooms.
Over five days, you will explore what intercultural education means and how to build a classroom culture where every student's identity is valued. You will learn how to welcome newcomer students and their families, from the first day to their full integration in the group. You will discover strategies for multilingual classrooms, such as using students' home languages as a resource, supporting learners who are still learning the school language and making subject content accessible to everyone. You will also learn how to include diverse perspectives in your lessons, use activities that prevent prejudice and discrimination, and respond firmly and fairly when discriminatory incidents happen. The course is practical and interactive, with real examples, case studies and group work.
By the end of the week, you will have designed an intercultural activity, welcome plan or multilingual lesson for your classroom and created a plan to make your teaching more inclusive of all cultures and languages.
